A catalog built around new work
Circus of Bones: The Art of Mike Mignola is a 144-page hardcover centered on 53 watercolor paintings made specifically for the associated New York exhibition. Act 4 Publishing, Skybound and Image Comics also list new ink illustrations, 29 new pencil drawings, 19 previously published covers and 42 published comics pages, including two complete stories. The publisher says the images are scanned from original art, making the book more than a souvenir of finished reproductions. It brings paintings, preliminary work and sequential pages into one object, allowing readers to see how Mignola's severe shapes, shadows and negative space operate across several stages and forms.
The exhibition and the book are related, not identical
The Mike Mignola: Circus of Bones exhibition runs at Philippe Labaune Gallery in New York from September 17 through October 24. The hardcover is its official catalog companion, but the announcement does not say that every work on the walls appears in the book or that every book image will be exhibited. That boundary matters for collectors deciding whether the publication fully substitutes for the show. A gallery-exclusive cover will be available through the venue, while the standard edition carries a Mignola cover. A delayed route to wider access
Readers outside New York will receive the durable version after the exhibition begins. The $49.99 hardcover is scheduled for comic shops on November 4 and bookstores on December 1. Those dates place the specialist channel first, then broaden availability after the physical show closes. The release is especially useful because exhibitions are temporary and original pages often disperse into private collections. A scanned catalog can preserve scale and line more faithfully than casual photographs, though it cannot reproduce the physical surface of watercolor or guarantee access to every exhibited piece.
