A magazine rather than a one-off anthology
Uncivilized Books describes DREGS! as a quarterly international magazine devoted to independent science-fiction and fantasy comics. Each issue is planned at 100 pages, with both short works and continuing series alongside interviews, essays and behind-the-scenes process material. That recurring structure distinguishes the project from a single anthology campaign: readers are being offered an editorial venue intended to return four times a year. The publisher cites Garo and Métal Hurlant as models, placing creator-focused experimentation and the magazine format at the center of the proposition.
Who the first issues bring together
The announced roster for the first two issues includes Matias Bergara, Michael DeForge, Ronald Wimberly, Gyimah Gariba, Tom Kaczynski and creators from several countries and independent-comics scenes. Each issue is also meant to appoint a guest artist for its cover and a substantial interview; Bergara fills that role for the debut. The mix matters because it gives the magazine two complementary functions: publishing new sequential work and documenting how artists approach it. Exact story assignments, page counts by contributor and the complete contents of each issue have not yet been published.
The September test
DREGS! is scheduled to launch a one-month crowdfunding presale on September 25. The announcement says the money is intended to print the magazine, pay its artists and place copies in comic shops. Those goals connect the campaign directly to both labor and distribution, but they are intentions rather than completed outcomes: no final funding, print run, tier structure, shipping territory or retail reach is established yet. The launch will therefore be the first practical test of whether a quarterly international magazine can convert its broad creative roster into a sustainable physical and direct-sales audience.
