Japanese film outlet Eiga.com reports that Lionsgate will distribute new Toei Animation projects in the United States and will be the first partner approached about future co-productions. Those are two different functions: distribution concerns getting finished films into the American market, while a first-look relationship gives Lionsgate an early opportunity to join financing or production without proving that it must accept every project. The report quotes executives from both companies but does not supply a primary contract, financial terms or a complete list of territories.
Monkey Quest is the first practical test
The first named theatrical project is Monkey Quest, planned for North America in 2027. The science-fiction adventure draws on Journey to the West and follows a twelve-year-old girl, her baby brother and a powerful imprisoned monkey guardian. Naoto Ohshima, known as a character designer on Sonic the Hedgehog, created the story and character concept, while J.K. Simmons voices the antagonist. The project was first introduced under the working title The Monkey Prince in 2018 and showed work-in-progress footage at Annecy in 2026, so the partnership supplies a route for an existing production rather than announcing it from scratch.
What this does not change
The report does not move every Toei property to Lionsgate, alter existing franchise distribution, or establish that Lionsgate will co-produce all future films. Charades is identified for territories outside the United States, which also means the U.S. relationship should not be treated as a worldwide license. Monkey Quest still lacks an exact date and a fully disclosed release map. The agreement becomes materially clearer when either company publishes its own terms, when Lionsgate dates the film, or when a second project demonstrates that this is a repeatable pipeline rather than a one-title arrangement.
