Sayonara Lara photography director explains how digital 4K imitates cel shadows, film jitter and hand-drawn water
In a September 5 interview, photography director Kazuto Izumida says director Takushi Koide consistently sought a handmade tactile feel rather than simple 1980s or 1990s nostalgia. The team treated the image like a restored older work: it simulated the slight shadows created when cels sit above backgrounds, added restrained film jitter and drew as much water as possible by hand. The opening also used an actual camera and cel-photography process for selected shots.
