Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell sue Anthropic over alleged copying of tens of thousands of songs
Sony and Warner publishing entities filed a 48-page complaint late August 28 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against Anthropic, CEO Dario Amodei and co-founder Benjamin Mann. The publishers allege direct infringement through torrenting, additional contributory infringement by the founders, and infringement plus removal or alteration of copyright-management information by Anthropic. They identify tens of thousands of compositions and seek statutory damages, destruction of allegedly infringing copies, an accounting of training data and a jury trial. Anthropic disputes the claims and says it will defend itself in court.
