The comparison is in unadjusted dollars, so every ticket contributes its contemporary price and premium formats can lift grosses without representing an equal number of admissions. Inflation-adjusted rankings can therefore tell a different historical story, and this figure should not be paraphrased as the largest audience ever. The US$936.7 million total also says nothing by itself about production and marketing costs, studio revenue shares or the film's eventual worldwide position.
