A defined split between Toei and CR motion+
The Storyteller: The Dawn of Legend is not described merely as a Toei license for outside production. Toei Animation will supervise pre-production and production management, while CR motion+ will carry out the core animation in Lagos. Takashi Washio and Jide Martin produce, and Ichiro Takano writes the 20-minute short. That distribution makes the collaboration operational: each company has a stated part in building the film. Toei calls it its first joint project with an African animation studio, a narrower and more verifiable milestone than claiming it is the first Japanese-African animation collaboration of any kind.
The project starts from a Nigerian webtoon world
The short spins off Trials of the Spear, a Comic Republic webtoon previously adapted by CR motion+. Its story brings the ancient spirit Akarigbere into present-day Lagos, where he tries to pass on the legend of hero Dayo Dawaru while the crowded city repeatedly ignores him. This premise places Nigerian characters, mythology and urban life at the center rather than simply moving a Japanese property to an African setting. Sony-backed nonprofit Arc & Beyond and JETRO supported the partnership, while Sony Pictures Entertainment is described only as exploring possible support; it is not announced as a distributor.
Festivals are a test plan, not public distribution
Production is scheduled for completion in spring 2027, after which the partners plan international film-festival premieres to build awareness and test market viability. No festival has been named and no streaming, broadcast or theatrical release has been secured publicly. Fans therefore have a production target but not yet a way to watch the short. The commercial significance will depend on whether those screenings lead to distribution or more shared projects, and the creative significance will be clearer once footage shows how the two studios combine their production methods without flattening the Lagos setting that distinguishes the source material.
