Piece of Magic brings online creators into theatrical release decisions after Iron Lung and Digital Circus

In a September 16 Screen Daily interview republished by Piece of Magic, chief executive Caspar Nadaud says digital creators take part in release decision-making because they understand their fanbases while the distributor supplies exhibition expertise. The company reports US$4 million in Europe for Markiplier's Iron Lung and more than US$14.5 million across 41 territories for The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act. It also plans Godzilla Minus Zero in 46 markets in November and projects up to 20% growth after nearly US$46.2 million in 2025 box office; those company figures and forecasts are unaudited.

Toho opens a public vote to create a new Godzilla-universe monster

Toho opened the New Monster General Election on September 16 with eight candidate creatures designed by Shirogumi. Fans may cast one vote per person per day through October 4; the top four then advance to a second vote ending October 25, with the winner announced at Godzilla Fest on November 3. Toho plans to feature the winner in a new Fest Godzilla tokusatsu production from 2027 onward and develop merchandise, but may revise its name, design or setting before use.

Doraemon: Nobita's Steam-Powered Time Machine fixes its Japanese cinema release for March 5, 2027

Japanese film outlet Eiga.com reported on September 15 that Doraemon: Nobita's Steam-Powered Time Machine will open in Japan on March 5, 2027, replacing the broader spring window announced in July. The first footage shows Doraemon and his friends travelling from twenty-first-century Japan to nineteenth-century Britain aboard the steam-locomotive-shaped time machine of the title. Ruchio Moriyama directs and Makoto Ueda writes the original story; neither international dates nor guest voices have been announced.

Chiikawa: The Secret of Mermaid Island becomes Japan's top-grossing 2026 film at ¥13.89 billion

ORICON reported on September 7 that Chiikawa: The Secret of Mermaid Island reached 9.6 million Japanese admissions and ¥13.89 billion after 45 days, passing Detective Conan: Highway no Datenshi at a reported ¥13.7 billion to become Japan's highest-grossing 2026 release so far. The film also moved to 23rd on Japan's all-time box-office chart and returned to first place for the September 4-6 weekend with 928,000 admissions and ¥1.415 billion. These are domestic running totals, not a final or worldwide gross.
