Chiikawa: The Secret of Mermaid Island becomes Japan's top-grossing 2026 film at ¥13.89 billion

ORICON reported on September 7 that Chiikawa: The Secret of Mermaid Island reached 9.6 million Japanese admissions and ¥13.89 billion after 45 days, passing Detective Conan: Highway no Datenshi at a reported ¥13.7 billion to become Japan's highest-grossing 2026 release so far. The film also moved to 23rd on Japan's all-time box-office chart and returned to first place for the September 4-6 weekend with 928,000 admissions and ¥1.415 billion. These are domestic running totals, not a final or worldwide gross.

Kura Sushi cancels its entire Chiikawa campaign across Japan after finding employee misconduct

Gourmet Watch reported from Kura Sushi's September 5 notice that the chain ended every part of the campaign when stores opened September 6 after an internal investigation found employee misconduct. The cancellation covers collaboration food, Bikkura Pon prizes, teacup and plate giveaways, receipt entries, videos and decorations. Television ads may temporarily still describe the campaign as active; the company did not identify the employee or quantify losses.
